Houthi Strikes on Saudi Oil Facilities Spark Regional Escalation
The Iran-aligned Houthi group has launched a major escalation in the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, striking oil facilities in southern Saudi Arabia.
According to Reuters, the Houthi group used drones and missiles to target a Saudi airbase and multiple Aramco sites in four cities. NASA satellite images showed thick smoke over the Jazan refinery and an oil distribution center in Abha, but tightly controlled conditions on the ground limited independent confirmation.
Saudi officials reported fires and approximately 70 people wounded. The attacks could disrupt Saudi oil routes beyond the Strait of Hormuz, leading to higher energy prices.
Hamad Hussain of Capital Economics notes that 'oil market participants now pricing in a more prolonged disruption to shipping flows.'
