Houthis Strike Yemen Port, Aramco Facility as Iran-Oman Deal Unfolds
The Houthis, Yemen's Iranian-backed rebels, claimed responsibility for attacks on a government-held port in Yemen and an oil facility in Saudi Arabia. The attacks killed at least seven people and injured 15 civilians, deepening fears over threats to strategic Middle East shipping routes.
The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said they targeted military forces and warehouses at the Red Sea port of Mokha, which is one of the main ports under Yemen's internationally recognized government. The Saudi Energy Ministry reported a fire at an Aramco refinery in Jazan, but no casualties were reported.
The attacks come as Iran and Oman are working to finalize a temporary deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil supplies. The deal would allow ships to transit without paying fees or tolls during an interim period.
