Hungary Eyes Exit from Russian Gas by October 2024
Hungary's Minister for Economy and Energy, István Kapitány, has outlined his plans to reduce the country's reliance on Russian gas. He said that Hungary could secure its gas supply without relying on Russian resources, with a possible exit from Russian gas by October next year.
The minister noted that Russia has historically been the most economical option for Hungary, but argued that alternative sources are now available and will be sufficient to meet the country's needs. He also mentioned that the government is discussing greater use of the Adriatic oil pipeline with Croatia, aiming to operate it at full capacity.
Kapitány emphasized the need to expand energy storage in Hungary, pointing out that the country's solar capacity has exceeded 8,000 megawatts but storage has not grown at the same pace. He also highlighted the importance of preparing for climate change effects, referencing this summer's low Danube water levels.
