Hungary Seeks Tariff Waiver from US Over Russian Oil Purchases
Hungary has asked US officials not to levy tariffs on the country for buying Russian oil, a move that could be a test for Prime Minister Peter Magyar's new government. Hungary is one of the biggest importers of Russian crude oil, following China, India, and Turkey.
The request comes after the US passed the 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026,' which allows the President to impose trade tariffs of up to 100% on countries that are large importers of Russian oil and natural gas.
Hungary's Foreign Policy Committee chair, Marton Hajdu, met with US officials in Washington and asked them not to impose tariffs during the period when Hungary is seeking to break free from Russian energy imports.
