IGX Sees Over 100% Year-on-Year Rise in Benchmark Gas Price
The Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) saw a significant increase in gas trading volume and benchmark price in August 2026. According to IGX's August Gas Market Update, the exchange traded 12.63 million MMBtu of gas during August, up 102.85% from the same month last year and 8.57% from July. This represents a doubling of the trading volume compared to August 2025.
The benchmark gas price index, GIXI, stood at Rs 2,102 per MMBtu in August, rising 107.30% from a year earlier and 14.43% from the previous month. The increase in benchmark price is not specified in the release as being due to any particular reason.
Domestic high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) gas accounted for approximately 41.11% of the traded volume, with the remaining 58.89% being free market gas. Private sector producers at Jaya, Hazira, and the coal bed methane block at Shahdol contributed significantly to the domestic gas trade.
The month also saw the execution of the first long-duration contract trade in Shahdol and the first small-scale LNG trade in Kochi. IGX facilitates delivery-based natural gas trading across 19 delivery points in India.
