Ilijan Power Plant Resumes Malampaya Gas Supply After Four-Year Hiatus
The Ilijan power plant in the Philippines has resumed receiving natural gas from the Malampaya field after a four-year hiatus. The resumption of supply follows the rehabilitation and restoration of the Ilijan natural gas receiving facility, which began in June 2022. This milestone marks more than just a return to fuel supply; it's also about utilizing existing energy infrastructure and maximizing available resources for the country.
The interim natural gas supply arrangement was signed between Prime Energy and South Premiere Power Corp., operator of the Ilijan power plant, for the provision of natural gas from Malampaya over a six-month period starting September 1, 2026. This new agreement is seen as a significant step forward in maintaining critical energy infrastructure built decades ago.
LNGPH, a joint venture consortium owned by Meralco PowerGen Corp., Aboitiz Power Corp., and San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp., is the parent company of SPPC, which operates the Ilijan power plant. Prime Energy's president and CEO, Donnabel Kuizon Cruz, emphasized that this development not only marks the return of Malampaya gas but also the continued use of critical energy infrastructure.
