Illinois Farmers Seek Diesel Cost Relief Amid Harvest Season Pressures
As Illinois' corn harvest season begins, the state's farmers are facing higher diesel fuel costs. The Illinois Corn Growers Association (ICGA) is seeking relief from policymakers to help farmers transport their crops to market.
The association has asked Governor JB Pritzker to explore options for reducing diesel costs for farmers, particularly during the harvest season. They also want the state's congressional delegation to work with the administration and investigate ways to allow farmers to use dyed diesel for qualifying agricultural purposes.
The proposed use of dyed diesel would apply to various agricultural activities, including transporting crops to processors, elevators, export terminals, and other points of sale. The Illinois Farm Bureau and Illinois Soybean Association are also supporting the effort to provide temporary diesel tax relief to help reduce transportation costs for Illinois farmers during harvest.
The ICGA is urging policymakers to act quickly to address this issue, as high diesel fuel costs can significantly impact farmers' profits and financial stability.
