Illinois grain producers are relying on established relationships with foreign markets to mitigate the impact of tariffs and uncertain times. The Illinois Department of Agriculture has been hosting Grain Tours since 1996 to foster these connections, bringing buyers from Asian countries to see the state's agricultural infrastructure firsthand.

Akram AbdElnaby, vice president of Egypt-based Alexandria Company for Vegetable Oils Extraction, participated in one such tour at Gray Family Farms in Waverly. He appreciated the opportunity to ask questions about production and quality control that he might not have otherwise gotten. 'We see some quality concerns and we want to know the reasons behind them,' AbdElnaby said.

About half of Illinois grain is exported, with Asian markets receiving roughly one-third of Midwest agricultural exports in 2023. The state's Department of Agriculture recognizes the importance of these relationships, especially during times of uncertainty. 'When you have the insertion of tariffs and uncertainty, it can be damaging to farm families,' said Kristi Jones, assistant director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Soybean sales have been reduced by 37% from the same time last year, while corn saw a 93% reduction in sales to China between fiscal years 2024 and 2025. The state's agricultural leaders acknowledge that strong relationships can help lessen these declines but cannot prevent them entirely.
