India cuts sunflower oil imports sharply due to Black Sea supply issues
India's edible oil imports took a notable dip in September 2026, falling by 3.75% from August to 1.5 million tons. The most significant decline was in sunflower oil imports, which plummeted by 36% month-over-month to 103 thousand tons, the lowest level since April 2022. This sharp reduction was primarily driven by supply disruptions from the Black Sea region.
In response to the sunflower oil shortage, Indian importers ramped up purchases of palm oil. September saw a 3.5% increase in palm oil shipments, reaching 810 thousand tons, the highest in seven months. The upcoming festival season, which typically boosts edible oil consumption, further fueled demand for palm oil.
Imports of soybean oil also experienced a decline, dropping by 4.6% from August's record to 600 thousand tons. India primarily sources palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, while sunflower and soybean oil come mainly from Argentina, Brazil, Russia, and Ukraine.
Market experts anticipate that sunflower oil imports will remain low in October due to ongoing logistical challenges. This could continue to support palm oil demand and potentially strengthen its market quotes.
