India Introduces LNG-Diesel Train to Reduce Diesel Dependence

India's rail network has taken a major step towards reducing its reliance on diesel fuel with the launch of an LNG-diesel dual-fuel train. The train, which combines liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel propulsion, was flagged off from Sabarmati railway station in Gujarat on September 27, 2026.

The train, operated by Western Railway's Ahmedabad Division, is equipped with two driving power cars converted to an LNG-diesel dual-fuel configuration at the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot. These power cars completed over 2,000 km of field trials before the launch and are expected to save approximately ₹11.9 lakh per driving power car annually.

The introduction of LNG is expected to reduce carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate emissions. While specific figures for annual fuel savings are not provided, railway estimates suggest that LNG can substitute around 40% of diesel consumption under the system.
