India Ships Record Food Exports to Greece and Canada
India's export of food products has reached new heights, with one tonne of makhana being shipped from Purnea in Bihar to Greece and 24 tonnes of frozen food products from Sonipat in Haryana sent to Canada.
The export marks a significant step towards expanding international market access for Indian food items, with India being the global leader in Makhana production. Bihar alone contributes 80-85% of the country's makhana production, with cultivation spanning over 35,000 hectares across 10 districts.
On the exports from Sonipat, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that export of products like green peas, mixed vegetables, sweet corn, and samosas is a significant step towards connecting farmers to the global value chain and achieving better prices for their produce. The sector in Bihar is supported by technical interventions at the grassroots level from Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, and ICAR-National Research Centre for Makhana, Darbhanga.
