India Slashes Edible Oil Import Duties Ahead of Diwali
India has reduced import duties on edible oils ahead of Diwali to stabilize prices and ensure adequate supply. The Ministry of Finance cut tariffs on crude palm oil and crude soybean oil from 10% to 5%, while fully eliminating levies on unrefined sunflower oil.
Roughly 60% of India's domestic edible oil demand is met through imports, making fluctuations in international prices immediately reflected in the local market. The government aims to bring down domestic edible oil prices and ease pressure during the festive months.
Sudhakar Desai, president of the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association, said the immediate priority is to ensure adequate edible oil supply nationwide for the upcoming festive months.
However, whether this rally in palm oil prices can be sustained remains uncertain. Anilkumar Bagani, research head at Mumbai-based Sunvin Group, believes that robust production-side performance and continued inventory buildup will limit further upside in palm oil prices.
