The Indian government has reduced import duties on palm oil, soybean oil, and sunflower oil to ease cooking oil prices ahead of the festive season. The basic customs duty on crude palm oil and soybean oil has been lowered from 10% to 5%, while refined palm oil and refined soybean oil now face a 27.5% duty rate.

The biggest reduction was made for crude sunflower oil, with its basic customs duty falling from 10% to zero. The duty on refined sunflower oil has also been significantly reduced, from 32.5% to 22.5%. Industry participants expect sunflower oil to benefit the most from these changes.

The government hopes that lower import duties will moderate prices and contain food inflation. However, the final impact on retail prices depends on international oil prices, exchange rates, inventories, freight costs, and how quickly the benefit moves through the supply chain.
