India Stocks Plunge for Sixth Straight Day Amid OPEC Tensions
Indian stock markets continued their downward trend on Tuesday, marking its sixth consecutive day of losses. The Nifty 50 index slipped 0.55% to close at 24,154.90, while the BSE Sensex declined by 0.63%, settling at 77,235.46.
The primary trigger for this market volatility has been the lapse of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire, which has renewed concerns regarding stability in the Middle East and led to a spike in global energy prices. Brent crude oil has surged past the $91 per barrel mark, posing a significant challenge for India, which imports a large portion of its oil requirements.
Rising U.S. bond yields have made global markets cautious, prompting foreign institutional investors to withdraw capital from emerging markets like India in search of safer returns. This shift in capital flows, combined with the depreciation of the rupee, has created a challenging environment for local equities.
