India Unemployment Rate Falls to 5.1%, Impact on Stocks and Economy Mixed
India's unemployment rate has fallen to 5.1% in July, down from 5.5% in June, according to a recent report.
The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) showed that labor force participation rates improved to 55.4%, up from 54.4%. The worker population ratio also rose to 52.5% from 51.4%.
Better employment is expected to support stocks tied to domestic demand, such as consumer companies and lenders, but investors still need to see sales volumes and corporate earnings before treating it as a positive signal.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has kept the repo rate at 5.25% since August 5, and most economists expect rates to stay unchanged through 2026 due to inflation and higher oil prices.
