India Unlocks $1.5B Wheat Export Opportunity Amid Global Market Shift
India's wheat export opportunity has grown significantly as global buyers seek to diversify their sources. According to an ASSOCHAM report, India can unlock a wheat export opportunity of over USD 1.5 billion in 2026. This is due to the country's record wheat harvest and surplus position, which have created room for expansion while meeting domestic food security needs.
The government has shifted the export policy for specified wheat varieties from 'Prohibited' to 'Free', covering wheat, durum wheat, atta, maida, and semolina/rava. India produced a record 120.7 million tonnes of wheat in 2025-26, retaining its position as the world's second-largest wheat producer.
The country has a price advantage in global markets, with its wheat MSP for FY2026-27 equivalent to around USD 268 per tonne compared to an international wheat price of about USD 303 per tonne in May 2026. Bangladesh offers the strongest opportunity for Indian wheat, while Egypt, Indonesia, Algeria, Morocco, and the Philippines could provide scope for gradual expansion.
