Indian Stock Market Plunges: Nifty 50 Falls Below 22,800

The Indian stock market ended sharply lower on Monday, September 28, 2026. The Nifty 50 closed at 22,780.25, down 360.25 points (-1.56%), while the Sensex fell over 1,100 points to 72,771.72 (-1.52%). Bank Nifty declined nearly 2% to close at 54,471.65.

The broad-based selling pressure weighed on all major sectors, with Realty emerging as the weakest performer, declining around 2.12%. The Energy sector also fell sharply by 2%, and Metal stocks witnessed a decline of 1.78%. Financial Services and Auto sectors faced significant losses, down 1.69% and 1.64%, respectively.

The global market trend was risk-off on Monday, with rising crude oil prices, elevated bond yields, and uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Iran talks contributing to the sell-off. Brent crude traded at $105.296 per barrel, up 3.35%, while gold prices fell below $4,200 per ounce.
