India's Union Cabinet Hikes Wheat MSP by Rs 25 Per Quintal

The Union Cabinet has approved an increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat by Rs 25 per quintal, taking it to Rs 2,610 per quintal for the 2027-28 rabi marketing year. This decision was announced by I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday.

The MSP for wheat in the previous marketing year (2026-27) was fixed at Rs 2,585 per quintal. The increase is part of a broader package of price hikes for various rabi crops, including barley, gram, masur, rapeseed/mustard seed, and safflower.

Barley MSP has been increased to Rs 2,286 per quintal for the 2027-28 rabi marketing year from Rs 2,150 per quintal in 2026-27. The support price of gram has been increased by Rs 83 to Rs 5,958 per quintal from Rs 5,875 per quintal.

Total payout to farmers is estimated to be Rs 90,962 crore for 324 lakh tonnes in the 2027-28 marketing year. The agriculture ministry has set a wheat production target of 121 million tonnes for the 2026-27 crop year (July-June).
