Indonesia has taken the top spot in Southeast Asia's gold market, outperforming Thailand and Vietnam combined. According to newly released statistics, Indonesia saw a significant surge in sales of gold bars and coins in the first half of this year, amounting to 38.1 tonnes.

This figure surpasses the combined sales of Thailand and Vietnam, which stood at 36.5 tonnes. When compared with the combined figure of Malaysia and Singapore, Indonesia's demand for gold tripled their total of 12.1 tonnes.

The World Gold Council attributes this remarkable performance to several factors, including the weakening currency and uncertainties surrounding the domestic economic outlook that have emphasized gold's role as a store of value.
