Iran Blockade Sends Oil Prices Surging Amid Global Market Volatility
Oil prices rebounded on Wednesday as Iran's blockade of key Strait of Hormuz shipping lanes held, causing concern for global energy markets. The S&P 500 also slipped in afternoon trading, despite earlier gains.
The price of Brent crude rose to $80.83 per barrel, up about 1% from the previous day's close. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil futures climbed to $75.25 per barrel, a gain of around 0.8%. The increase in oil prices comes as Iran continues its blockade of the Strait, which is one of the world's most critical shipping routes.
The S&P 500 index, which tracks the performance of the largest publicly traded companies in the US, fell by about 0.2% in afternoon trading, despite earlier gains. The index has been volatile this week, with some market analysts pointing to concerns over inflation and interest rates as potential drivers of volatility.
