Iran Discovers Major Gas Reserve in Fars Province
Iran's energy sector has received a boost following the discovery of over 200 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the Fars province. The newly discovered field contains more than 160 billion cubic meters that can be extracted, according to Iranian Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad.
The minister described the gas as 'sweet' natural gas, meaning it contains very little hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas. This lower content could help reduce operating and development costs at the field.
The discovery comes as Iran's energy sector faces pressure following months of conflict and attacks on parts of its energy infrastructure. While the benefits may not be immediate, the newly identified reserves could provide an additional source of natural gas for Iran.
