Iran Grants Passage to Iraqi Oil Tankers Through Hormuz Strait Amid Ongoing Tensions
Tehran has granted permission for some Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, despite ongoing tensions in the region. The decision was made after repeated requests from Baghdad, which sought passage for its oil tankers through several channels.
Iran has asserted control over the strait since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East on February 28, requiring vessels to obtain permission and pay transit fees before using the waterway. According to state media, Tehran granted permission to a number of Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz over the past six months.
The report noted that Iraq had requested passage for its oil tankers during the trip to Iraq by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's parliamentary speaker and lead negotiator in talks with the US. The move is seen as a gesture of goodwill towards Baghdad, which has been affected by the ongoing conflict.
