Iran Offers Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Amid US Sanctions
A new proposal has been put forth by Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program, according to Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute think tank.
The plan, which would see the US lift its naval blockade and waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales in exchange for a ceasefire that includes Lebanon, has been conveyed to Washington by mediators.
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, suggested the proposal during a private gathering at the UN General Assembly in New York, where he said a speedy agreement would help US President Donald Trump ahead of November's midterm elections.
The arrangement would also alleviate economic pressure on Tehran, which has been piling up due to additional sanctions imposed by the US.
