Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz and Resume Nuclear Talks

The Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program are at the center of a new proposal by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In exchange for the U.S. lifting its naval blockade, waiving oil sanctions, and observing a ceasefire that includes Lebanon, Iran would reopen the strait and resume talks on its nuclear program within seven days.

The proposal was made at a private gathering on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute think tank, who attended the event, confirmed that Araghchi detailed the plan to those gathered.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical shipping route, and its closure would have significant economic implications for global trade. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Iran's oil exports in an effort to pressure Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.
