Iran Offers US New Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Before Midterm Election

Tehran has offered Washington a new deal to end the months-long conflict before the US midterm election in November, directly challenging President Donald Trump's claim that Iran is stalling talks to see how Republicans perform.

The Iranian proposal, submitted through mediators during UN General Assembly talks this week, would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within days if Washington lifts its economic blockade and returns to a ceasefire framework.

Under the plan, Tehran would restore navigation through the critical oil shipping route in exchange for Washington lifting its blockade, easing restrictions on Iranian oil exports, and releasing some frozen assets.

Tehran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the proposal largely follows the terms of a June memorandum, but Iran is still seeking an end to hostilities on other fronts, including Israel's combat operations in Lebanon.
