Iran-Oman Talks Spark Oil Price Drop Amid Ongoing US-Iran Tensions
Oil prices dropped on Thursday after Iran announced progress in talks with Oman over a shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. The development has raised hopes for an end to disruptions in energy supplies, but investors remain cautious due to ongoing tensions between the US and Iran.
The Brent crude futures price fell by 0.42% to $79.12 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate futures declined by 0.56% to $74.80 a barrel. The prices had previously risen after US President Donald Trump said a deal reopening the strait was imminent, but this has not been confirmed.
A joint announcement is being finalized between Iran and Oman on the geographic coordinates for a shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei. However, it remains unclear whether the US will agree to Iran controlling access to the world's most important trade route for energy supplies.
Iran has warned Gulf states that any new US attack on its territory would trigger retaliation against critical energy infrastructure across the region. This move is seen as an attempt by Tehran to raise the cost of military action by threatening Washington's closest regional allies.
