Iran Opens Strait of Hormuz to Iraqi Oil Tankers
Iran has granted permission for Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz following repeated requests from Baghdad. The move is seen as a significant development, given that Iraq has been one of the countries most affected by Iran's closure of the strait.
The agreement was reached after Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf visited Iraq and obtained special permission for Iraqi tankers to pass through the strait. This was one of Baghdad's main requests during Ghalibaf's visit, according to IRNA.
Iraqi President Nizar Amedi said that Iran had facilitated the passage of vessels carrying Iraqi oil through the Strait in recent days and that Baghdad had discussed the export of Iraqi oil through Hormuz with Iranian officials. However, he noted that the issue remained complicated.
Iraq has been trying to expand its exports through other routes, including Turkey's Ceyhan port and Syria's Baniyas port, as well as Jordan's Aqaba port, Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi said on Friday.
