Iran Peace Proposal Sends Crude Futures Plummeting
A new Iranian proposal for peace talks has sent crude oil futures plummeting on Friday, but prices remain poised for strong weekly gains. The Brent benchmark and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures fell by 2.02% and 2.98%, respectively, as the market reacted to Tehran's latest offer.
The Iranian proposal was submitted to Pakistani mediators on Thursday, state news agency IRNA reported. This development has given hope to some market analysts that there is an off-ramp for the United States in the ongoing conflict with Iran. 'This Iran proposal has given hope to the market that there is an off-ramp for the United States,' said Phil Flynn, senior analyst with Price Futures Group.
The oil market has been on edge since the US and Israel attacked Iran at the end of February, resulting in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disruption of shipments. However, a ceasefire has been in place since April 8, and the oil market appears to be accepting the uneasy truce for now.
UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash expressed deep mistrust towards Iran's unilateral arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz, stating that they cannot be trusted. The situation remains a stalemate until further developments occur.
