Iran Proposes Reopening Strait of Hormuz within Seven Days
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, pending certain conditions. The proposal was made in New York during the UN General Assembly, where Araghchi met with US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff.
The plan calls for a cessation of all hostilities in the Middle East for seven days, including in Lebanon, as well as the release of frozen Iranian assets estimated to be worth at least $12 billion. Additionally, the US would need to lift sanctions on Iranian oil and end its naval blockade of Iran.
Araghchi stated that he is waiting for a US response to the plan and emphasized that China supports the proposal. Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently visiting the US for talks with Trump.
This latest development comes after a previous agreement between the US and Iran broke down in June, when Iran fired on commercial ships in Hormuz that it accused of deviating from its approved route through the waterway.
