The Strait of Hormuz has become a volatile hotspot as Iran claims to have struck an oil tanker, while South Korea considers expanding its naval operations in the region.

According to Iranian state broadcaster reports, the Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for striking a Togo-flagged oil tanker, the Trend, citing an 'illegal attempt' to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Associated Press could not confirm this report. However, the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported a ship security incident 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, with no environmental impact or injuries reported.

In a separate incident, the UKMTO also reported that another tanker was hit by an 'unknown projectile' while transiting out of the strait. The crew was safe in both incidents, but it's unclear if these events are connected to Iran's claim.
