Iran Strikes Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions
A high-profile confrontation between Iran and an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz has been reported by Iranian authorities. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims to have struck the Togo-flagged Trend oil tanker due to what it called an 'illegal attempt' to pass through the strait without permission.
The IRGC's navy warned that any vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz without authorization would face destruction, according to Iran's state broadcaster. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a 'security incident' overnight involving a vessel 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman.
The crew of the affected tanker was safe and no environmental impact was reported by the UKMTO. However, it remains unclear whether this incident is related to the attack claimed by Iran on the Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend. The US military has been escorting some commercial ships through the strait off Oman due to the threat of Iranian attacks.
