Iran has embarked on an ambitious solar power project in Isfahan Province, which upon completion will rank among the world's largest centers of solar electricity generation. The $2.8 billion project involves private-sector investment and aims to add a significant volume of renewable energy to the country's grid, addressing a chronic electricity shortage.

The 5,000-megawatt solar plant is expected to occupy approximately 6,000 hectares in Kuhpayeh, with construction planned in three packages. This project represents a major milestone in Iran's push to expand renewable power capacity, which has accelerated significantly over the past two years.

Renewable energy has become an economic necessity for Iran due to its dependence on natural gas, which competes with other sectors like industry and households for fuel supply. The Isfahan project can help free up gas for alternative uses, reduce reliance on liquid fuels during shortages, and diversify the country's electricity supply.
