Iran War Drives Clean Energy Adoption, But Impact Remains Uncertain

As the war against Iran continues to drive up oil and gas prices, countries around the world are embracing clean energy in an effort to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. Over 30 governments have enacted policies aimed at transitioning away from fossil fuels or improving energy efficiency, according to the International Energy Agency.

The impact of these efforts is still unclear, however. While some experts believe that the war could accelerate the adoption of clean energy, others warn that it will take years for new policies to show results and make a significant dent in climate change.

Clean investment has indeed slowed globally, with global investment in wind and solar deployment falling by 7% in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year. However, some regions have bucked this trend, with investments in solar power growing in the US, Europe, and India.

Despite these efforts, global greenhouse gas emissions increased marginally in the first half of this year, driven by a rise in emissions from road transportation. The war itself is also expected to increase emissions further.
