Iran War Fuel Shock Spreads Globally
The ongoing Iran war is causing a ripple effect on the global economy, driving up fuel prices and inflation. The Financial Times reports that the crisis has led to a shortage of refined fuels, with global output more than 4 million barrels a day lower in August compared to the previous year.
The shortage has resulted in diesel prices surpassing $200 a barrel in the US and Europe. To mitigate the impact on consumers, 94 countries have implemented measures such as cutting taxes, capping prices, or subsidizing fuel.
Central banks are also intervening by raising interest rates to combat inflationary pressure caused by energy costs. However, uncertainty over oil storage levels has made it difficult for policymakers and traders to assess the duration of the disruption.
