Iran's Conditions for Strait Reopening Spark Oil Price Surge
Iran's demands for reopening the Strait of Hormuz have led to an increase in oil prices. According to Westpac, the strategic waterway remains effectively closed, causing uncertainty and volatility in global energy markets.
The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that the strait will not reopen until Washington meets certain conditions, including easing sanctions and paying war reparations. He also emphasized that Tehran is not currently engaging in direct talks with the US.
The Brent crude futures for October delivery rose 1.09% to $84.46 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate futures for September increased by 0.84% to $78.84. Despite the energy market instability, Asian stocks showed resilience, with Japan's Nikkei 225 gaining 2.1%, South Korea's Kospi up 0.7%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index 0.6% higher.
