Trump Shifts Strategy on Iran, Deploys Economic Pressure Instead
US President Donald Trump has signaled a shift in strategy towards Iran, saying that America is 'low-keying' talks with Tehran. In an interview with Axios, Trump stated that Washington is only semi-negotiating with Iran and is instead focusing on deploying economic pressure.
The move comes as the conflict between the US and Iran nears its sixth month. Despite ongoing negotiations to end the conflict, Trump's comments suggest a more cautious approach from Washington.
Iran has maintained that no direct talks can take place with America until Washington honors the interim deal agreement signed in June. The country has also been negotiating with Oman on a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has contributed to rising oil prices.
