Iran's Revolutionary Guards Strike Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Revolutionary Guards have claimed responsibility for striking an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, according to state news agency IRNA. The move follows a list of demands issued by Iran over the weekend for reopening the strategic waterway.
The US President had signalled earlier that he was prepared to let economic pressure mount against Iran after Tehran issued its conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has maintained control over the strait as Washington continues pressing its counterblockade of Iranian ports during the Middle East war. The Islamic republic wants to charge ships for passage and attack vessels it accuses of attempting to circumvent its preferred route.
A British maritime agency, UKMTO, also reported an attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz late on Thursday, without giving details.
