Iraq-Syria Oil Pipeline Faces Years-Long Delay
The project to build an oil pipeline from Iraq to Syria's Mediterranean coast has been in the works for years, but it still faces significant hurdles.
According to sources familiar with the project, construction is at least four years away and will require a $15 billion investment. The plan aims to reduce the importance of the Strait of Hormuz in global oil supply, a goal supported by the U.S. Administration.
The pipeline would be crucial for Iraq's oil exports not depending on Hormuz, Syria's post-war economy, and reduced Iranian leverage in the Strait of Hormuz.
