KRG to Export Locally Produced Wheat Abroad for First Time
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is set to export locally produced wheat abroad for the first time, as part of its efforts to support farmers and expand markets for Kurdish agricultural products.
KRG Director General of Commerce Nawzad Sheikh Kamil said that over 800,000 tons of wheat have been purchased from farmers this year, with more than 387,000 tons bought during the first stage of the procurement process in June and July.
To facilitate exports, a high-level committee was formed to streamline the export process, and 11 companies registered to participate. To encourage more companies to enter the market, the KRG removed the requirement for a special commercial license and allowed wheat to be transported directly from storage facilities to customs points.
The government also exempted 245,000 tons of wheat designated for export from customs duties, in an effort to reduce costs and keep locally produced wheat competitive in international markets. Several companies have now completed the required procedures, and wheat exports are expected to begin this week.
