Lao Gold Festival Drives Record Sales, Fueling Hub Ambitions
The Lao Gold Festival 2026 in Vientiane drew over 50,000 visitors and saw 230 kilograms of gold worth US$33 million sold in just three days. This surge in demand defied softer global gold sales and rising prices.
Lao consumers bought the gold for investment purposes and traditional reasons such as weddings and festivals. Vice President of the Laos Gold and Jewelry Association, Chanthavong Phamisith, explained that people in Laos believe gold is a safe investment, allowing them to hedge against risks like currency depreciation, inflation, or economic stress.
The festival's sales figures demonstrate that despite global market fluctuations, price-sensitive Asian buyers are not shying away from gold. Chanthavong noted that consumers prefer physical assets over bank balances or stocks and find gold easily convertible to cash.
