Lloyd's Register (LR) is providing classification and technical assurance for the conversion of an LNG carrier into a floating storage unit (FSU) for an offshore gas project in Gabon.

The former LNG carrier, now named FSU LNG Cap Lopez, is currently undergoing extensive modifications at Drydocks World Dubai. The vessel will provide LNG storage for the Cap Lopez project in Gabon once completed.

LNG carrier conversions can be a faster and more cost-effective option than building new floating units, particularly for offshore gas developments, according to LR. The society provides technical oversight throughout the conversion process, including plan approval, surveys, and verification of modifications that meet relevant safety, structural, and regulatory requirements.
