LNG Market Faces Uncertain Future Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The global LNG market is facing an uncertain future due to ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. For nearly seven months, energy markets have been waiting for a resolution to the situation, but analysts are now pushing back the potential reopening timeline to early 2027.
While some buyers remain optimistic about a progressive reopening of the Strait, others are more concerned about the risks of an indefinite blockade by Iranian missile and drone threats. This could force them to secure alternative long-term supplies, further fragmenting the market.
One possible solution is trilateral agreements between countries, such as the deal between Pakistan and Iran to procure Qatari LNG cargoes. China has already contracted significant amounts of Qatari LNG in recent years, and could potentially broker deals with Iran and Gulf exporters to maintain a diversified gas import mix.
