Manitoba Sweetens Deal for Port of Churchill Expansion
The Port of Churchill in Manitoba is seeking investors for its expansion project, known as Port of Churchill Plus. Premier Wab Kinew announced that certain capital investments to the port expansion would be exempt from provincial sales tax.
This exemption includes a new energy corridor and liquefied natural gas facilities, rail line upgrades to Class 1, or either icebreakers or ice-class ships. The province put the cost of those ships at $100-$130 million, citing recent feasibility studies.
The Port of Churchill Plus is among the infrastructure projects getting pitched at the federal government's Canada Investment Summit in Toronto. Kinew described the new tax breaks as a chance for investors to 'get in on the ground floor' of the expansion.
