Mediators Push for Deal as Iran-US Conflict Drags On
Behind-the-scenes talks are ongoing between Iran and the United States to broker a deal to end the conflict in the Middle East, according to three regional officials and two US officials.
The indirect talks aim to address global economic damage caused by the eight-month conflict, which has badly battered Iran. Multiple efforts to allow safe shipping on the Strait of Hormuz have failed, causing concern for international oil prices, which are currently above $108 per barrel.
US President Donald Trump is open to pursuing a non-military resolution if one can be achieved, but the administration will not reach a deal with Tehran until nuclear issues are addressed. Iran has proposed lifting sanctions and releasing frozen assets in exchange for concessions on its nuclear program, including allowing inspectors to enter the country.
The draft text being discussed includes reopening the strait and lifting the US blockade, followed by removing sanctions. However, significant hurdles remain between the two sides, with Iran seeking faster action on some of its demands.
