Michigan Supports Copperwood Mine Project to Bolster Automotive Supply Chain
The Copperwood Mine Project in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan has gained support from MichAuto and the Detroit Regional Chamber. The project aims to strengthen Michigan's automotive supply chain while providing an economic boost to the region. As Glenn Stevens Jr., Executive Director of MichAuto, stated, 'Copper demand is surging, and the Copperwood Mine project will strengthen Michigan's automotive supply chain while providing an economic boost in the U.P., which has long helped sustain this country's manufacturing industry.'
Copper is a critical mineral used in EV batteries, charging infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy systems. The project represents an opportunity for Michigan to reduce its reliance on foreign mineral sources, support job creation, and advance the state's leadership in next-generation mobility and the circular economy.
The Copperwood Mine Project is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for copper, which is set to double globally by 2035. Stevens emphasized the importance of U.S.-sourced critical minerals, stating that 'having U.S.-sourced critical minerals is essential to supply chain resiliency and ensuring our manufacturers have secure resource options as they compete globally to develop next-generation mobility and new-energy technologies and products.'
The project's success would not only benefit the local economy but also contribute to Michigan's leadership in sustainable energy technologies and next-generation mobility.
