Middle East Conflict Spirals Out of Control, Threatening Global Energy Markets
The Middle East is on the brink of a major conflict, threatening global energy markets and putting at risk economies around the world. The escalation began with a targeted military strike by Saudi Arabian forces against an airport runway in Yemen, which they claimed was intended to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing.
The incident has rapidly spiralled out of control, drawing in multiple countries including Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Oman, Pakistan, and several non-state actors. The conflict is now at a critical stage, with Houthi forces reportedly gaining ground against the Saudi-backed government of Yemen.
The situation has raised fears of disruptions to international trade, particularly in the Red Sea, where one of the world's most critical energy corridors lies. With tensions already high around the Strait of Hormuz, which carries a significant share of global oil supplies, the risks to the global economy continue to mount.
