Middle East Tensions Spark Crude Delivery Delays to India
Escalating tensions in the Middle East have led to delivery delays for key crude shipments to India, forcing state-run refiners to procure high-cost spot cargoes at short notice.
The delivery snarls stem from heightened maritime conflict surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit chokepoint connecting Persian Gulf exporters to Asian markets.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) experienced non-delivery on schedule for four Persian Gulf cargoes in August, including two shipments from the United Arab Emirates and one each from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) also faced delivery disruptions, compelling supply managers to realign refinery processing timelines.
To prevent run cuts at domestic processing plants, refiners launched a flurry of short-notice purchase tenders, paying elevated premiums for quick-delivery replacement barrels.
