Mongolia's Copper Revolution Surpasses Coal Exports for First Time

Mongolia's economy is undergoing a significant shift as its revenue from copper concentrate exports surpasses coal exports for the first time. This trend, which began last year, has intensified in the first half of this year due to declining global coal prices and rising copper prices.

In the first six months of this year, mineral products accounted for 87.2% of Mongolia's total export revenue. Copper concentrate generated 44.7% of revenue, while coal accounted for 37.9%. The country exported 56.8 million tonnes of coal worth $3.94 billion, a significant increase from the same period last year.

However, global coal prices continue to fall, limiting further growth in this sector. In contrast, copper concentrate exports reached 1.31 million tonnes, generating revenue of $4.65 billion, a substantial increase from the same period last year.

The rapid growth in global demand for copper is driving its price upwards, with refined copper on the London Metal Exchange reaching $13,645 per tonne. Analysts at Goldman Sachs predict that the price will reach $13,735 per tonne by the end of this year, a 10% increase from their previous estimate.

As Mongolia's economy becomes increasingly dependent on copper exports, it is crucial for the state to adopt a long-term strategy to manage opportunities and mitigate risks. This includes stepping up geological exploration, creating a stable legal framework, and increasing value-added products through deep enrichment and raw material processing technologies.
