Mt Isa Renaissance Driven by M&A Frenzy, Evolution Acquires Carnaby Resources' Greater Duchess Project
The Mount Isa renaissance is underway, driven by a flurry of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) that aim to capitalize on regional exploration potential. The tier-1 mining district has seen several deals in recent times, with Larvotto Resources' (ASX:LRV) and Austral Resources (ASX:AR1) vying for Hammer Metals (ASX:HMX), while Carnaby Resources' (ASX:CNB) Greater Duchess project has attracted Evolution Mining (ASX:EVN).
Under the proposed scheme, Carnaby shareholders will receive $213m from EVN, representing a 60.4% premium to Carnaby's last closing price of 48c per share on July 24. The deal also gives Glencore (LSE:GLEN) a stake in Evolution via the exchange of a 9.4% interest in Carnaby for cancelling an off-take agreement.
The Greater Duchess project has a pre-feasibility study that mapped out a short payback period of 13 months, low pre-production capex (A$11m), and first production in H2 CY26 to capitalize on record copper prices. EVN managing director Lawrie Conway said the acquisition consolidates their position in the highly prospective Cloncurry portion.
True North Copper (ASX:TNC) is another Mt Isa district play that's impressing analysts with its multi-commodity growth strategy. The company has a valuation of 96c, more than double its current share price as it morphs into a dual-development copper company. MST Access recently initiated coverage on the company.
