National Interest Designation for West Coast Pipeline Fast-Tracks Approval Process
A proposed oil pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. coast has been designated as a project in the national interest, fast-tracking its approval process.
The West Coast Pacific Link pipeline will carry one million barrels of oil per day and is expected to boost Canada's GDP by up to $30 billion annually, with $20 billion coming directly from the pipeline itself.
The federal government estimates the project will create up to 140,000 jobs and increase private sector ownership, with investors already poised to take part.
However, environmental organizations like Greenpeace and the Pembina Institute are opposing the project, citing increased greenhouse gas emissions and a lack of investment in cleaner energy solutions.
